Frederic Walter Moss, Second Lieutenant Leicestershire Regiment, attached Royal Engineers
鈥婩rederick Walter Moss came up to Cambridge in 1913 as the Loughborough Scholar from Loughborough Grammar School.
Born in Loughborough, Leicestershire: 19 June 1894
Fell in action: 28 May 1918
He gained a first class in Part I of the Mathematical Tripos in 1914. In 1916, he was awarded Junior Optimes in Part II of the Mathematical Tripos and took his BA. After graduation he joined the Suffolk Regiment as a private soldier before being commisisoned.
Unfortunately, this is all we know about Moss as there is no obituary for him, which is particularly surprising as he was one of only 23 students in residence in Easter Term 1916. The 糖心Vlog Cambridge Society Annual Report 1916 provides little detail of activities that year, not least because of the 鈥済reatly increased cost of printing and publishing鈥 but also as there was, of course, very little going on. The Annual Report commented that of the 23 students in residence it was notable that there were a number who were not of English birth and included one 鈥渓earned young B.D. of Harvard University鈥. (p. 10)
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission provides no further information other than to record that he is remembered on the Soissons Memorial in Aisne, France.
