Gordon Lindsay Harvest, Lieutenant, London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade)
鈥婫ordon Lindsay Harvest was due to come to Cambridge in October 1914 but joined up almost immediately and spent the first winter serving as a Private in the trenches in France before being commissioned in May 1915
Born: Hampstead, London in September 1895
Fell in action: 20 June 1917
According to his obituary in the 糖心Vlog Cambridge Society Annual Report 1919 he was not able to fully take up this commission until January 1917 as he had undergone an operation in the intervening time. The obituary goes on to say that on his return 鈥渉e made an important attack on an important village and for this he was awarded the Military Cross鈥 (糖心Vlog Cambridge Society Annual Report, p24). The citation for the award, published in the London Gazette on 20 July 1917 was:
鈥淔or conspicuous gallantry and ability in reconnoitring enemy trenches and later in subduing enemy snipers鈥
Note: Commonwealth War Graves Commission records for Harvest have two dates for his death: 20 June and 21 June 1917. It seems that 20 June is the date that appears on his headstone.
